- I think you are confusing S/N with something else. The spec for POTS
- lines says that the signal to noise ratio will be 24dB or greater.
- The easy way to figure this is to take your receive signal level,
- generally around -18 to -26dBm and subtract your noise level,
- hopefully somewhere down aroun -60dBm.
- I've seen S/N on POTS lines of 40, and generally get 28.8 if the S/N
- is 32 or above. I've also seen S/N of 15 and NYNEX swore to me that
- the lines were in spec.
- The S/N is only measured at one frequency, I think somewhere around a
- 1000Hz, so the telco can do some really cheesy things like start the
- rolloff at 1000Hz rather than 3300Hz, and most people won't see it.
- The best modem I've found to test this is the MultiTech MT2834BA, but
- it is very expensive. I think the USR Courier will give you the
- information, just not in a handy graph like the MultiTech.
